Pacific Classic 2013Pacific Classic 2013 | The Pacific Classic 2013 will be staged on Sunday August 25th and should be a great event both for betting and general viewing. Dullahan was trained by Dale Romans to win Del Mar’s $1 million Pacific Classic in 2012 under a fine ride by Joel Rosario. The Kentucky bred son of Even The Score beat Game On Dude by half a length in a new course record time for the Polytrack of 1:59.54. Dullahan was voted Horse of the Meeting for 2012 by the media and also top three-year-old.

Info and History

The Pacific Classic Stakes is a Grade I race at Del Mar racetrack, California over a mile and a quarter. It was first held in 1991 and is open to three-year-olds and upwards. It carries a guaranteed purse of $1,000,000 and is now established as one of the top prizes for older horses in American horse racing.

In 1996 the great champion Cigar was stunned by 39-1 outsider Dare And Go, thwarting his attempt to beat Citation’s run of 16 consecutive victories. Top jockey Julie Krone become the first female rider to win a million-dollar race when she won on Candy Ride in 2003.

Del Mar changed from dirt to synthetic Polytrack in 2007 and the first winner on the new surface was long-shot Student Council. From 2008, the Pacific Classic became part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge, the winner automatically earning a place in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

2012 Pacific Classic:

The Winners

Popular California horse Best Pal won the inaugural running of the race in 1991. In 1995, he had a 2-year-old stakes race named in his honour at Del Mar and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2010. Four winners of the Pacific Classic have been awarded California Horse of the Year, but none has gone on to claim the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year. Two horses that finished second in the Pacific Classic, Cigar and Tiznow (2000) did go on to win the Horse of the Year.

Cigar’s shock defeat at the hands of Dare And Go is probably the most memorable race in Pacific Classic History. Bill Mott’s champion bounced back to win the Grade I Woodward Stakes at Belmont next time before being beaten a head at odds of 1-5 in the Jockey Club Gold Cup by Skip Away. He tried hard to end his career in glory at the Breeders’ Cup but had to settle for third place, beaten a nose and a head by Alphabet Soup and Louis Quartorze.

The 1992 winner Missionary Ridge, started life in Lambourn with Barry Hills and ran in the Epsom Derby before making a career for himself in America. Gary Stevens had been forced to give up the mount on Candy Ride in 2003 through injury but took the time to give full instructions to replacement Julie Krone on how to handle the colt. Stevens told Krone that she shouldn’t be frightened to take on the favourite Medaglia d’Oro early on and his instructions were carried out to the letter.

In 2006, Lava Man became the first horse to win the Santa Anita Handicap, the Hollywood Gold Cup, and the Pacific Classic in a single season. The 2006 edition was the last time the race was run on dirt.

Prior to his victory in the 2004 Pacific Classic, Pleasantly Perfect had established himself as a champion with victories in the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Classic and the 2004 Dubai World Cup.

The Records

Dullahan set a new track record on the polytrack in 2012 (1:59.54). Three horses have won the race three times; Tinners Way (1994, 1995), Skimming (2000, 2001) and Richard’s Kid (2009, 2010). Jockey Garrett Gomez rode Skimming to both victories and has since won on Borrego (2005) and Go Between (2008). The legendary trainer Robert J. Frankel has won the race six times (1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001).
